Meet a player from the Ulster Orchestra and learn about the Orchestra in an informal and entertaining way. An Ulster Orchestra player will visit the classroom to demonstrate his/her instrument and talk about what life is like as a professional orchestral musician.

Creative Music Projects

Creative music projects encourage active participation and experimentation in the creation of music and are designed to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum. One or more workshop sessions may also culminate in a final performance for school, friends and family. The workshops explore pitch, rhythm, texture, timbre and form, and can be adapted to suit all levels from primary to post-primary. All Creative Music Projects start from £80 plus travel outside Belfast. The price will increase depending on the chosen programme and the number of players involved.

Electro Acoustic Workshop

Elektra – the Orchestra’s electric string quartet – explores the differences in sound production between acoustic and electric instruments, the use of effects and enhancements and the technical difficulties of using amplified sounds.

Jazz Bands School Concert

Discover the music that shaped the 20th century as the Ulster Orchestra Jazz Band swings into town demonstrating its instruments in both classical and jazz styles and hosting a programme of contemporary classics from Benny Goodman to New Orleans Blues.

An entertaining introduction to popular classics given by the Ireland String Quartet (2 violins, viola & double bass).

School Band / Orchestra Coaching & Conducting

Ulster Orchestra musicians - Ruth Bebb (strings), Chris Blake (brass/piano), and Colin Stark (wind) - offer solo performance coaching to individual players who are preparing for GCSE / A-Level practical examinations.

Ulster Brass Plus

Your school’s band, orchestra and/or choir experience an interactive workshop and are given the opportunity to rehearse and perform specially written music with members of the quintet at a recital for parents and the whole school.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes concert (with rehearsals scheduled to suit)

AS Music Workshop

The Orion Duo – violin/viola & piano – and Colin Stark – oboe – host a workshop on the concerto on 13 November in the Elmwood Hall at Queen’s, Belfast. The morning will be spent looking at two parts of the AS syllabus (CEA) – the four set extracts from concertos, and the compulsory area of study, “The Concerto from 1700 – 1897”. Chris Blake will demonstrate natural horn, playing the Mozart set work, and Ruth Bebb will play Corelli on baroque violin.
