David Openshaw

David Openshaw, Principal Timpani, studied at the Northern School of Music in Manchester, joined the Ulster Orchestra in 1972.

Earliest musical memory?

My earliest musical memory would have to be performing in “La Boutique Fantasque” in primary school!

Who were your greatest musical influences?

My greatest musical influences would undoubtedly include Beethoven, Sir John Barbirolli and George Hurst.

If you could play any other instrument, what would it be?

I’ve always wanted to play piano or french horn although I enjoy conducting and am the Principal Conductor of the Studio Symphony Orchestra.

Can you tell us a bit about what is involved in typical set of kettle drums in an orchestra?

A typical set of timps consists of anything up to 5 or 6 drums. The larger the drum the lower the range of notes, which are controlled by means of a pedal

What’s in your cd player right now?

I tend not to listen to much music these days, unless I am learning a piece. However, I do have a collection of about 400 vinyls and 600-700 cd’s.

Are there any other musicians in your family?

I am married with one son and one daughter and my daughter is also a timpanist/percussionist, currently freelancing in Glasgow.
